RIOT GIRLS--GOOD LITTLE LIBERALS?

It's about time The Nation took account of the distinct forms of feminist activism that appeared in the nineties, but I wish Ann Cvetkovich and Gretchen Phillips had used "Revenge of the Girl Bands" [July 10] to do more than plump for a handful of bands, labels and festivals. The riot grrl and homocore scenes they celebrate are part of a larger, ongoing generational reconfiguration of feminism and therefore warrant not just our optimism but our serious critical engagement. I too am relieved that feminism in some form has survived more than a decade of backlash, but we need to contain our relief long enough to ask: How does the future of feminism look?
