What McCain Needs to Tell Us About Sarah Palin

posted by John Nichols on 09/06/2008 @ 08:42am

Now that the Republican National Convention is done, there is much speculation about how Alaska Governor Sarah Palin will respond to questions from the media that she so pointedly attacked in his Wednesday night speech to delegates who cheered her "here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators" announcement that "I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion -- I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country.

The interviews with Palin will be important. And everyone I've talked to from Alaska says that she will handle them ably. This is not a woman who is going to stumble on the "gotcha" questions. In fact, she will tear into them with the relish of the lipstick-wearing pit bull she described Wednesday night.

I'm more interested, actually, in the next serious sit-down interview with John McCain.

There's the set-up for the question McCain needs to answer: The talking-point message from the McCain-Palin campaign and its enthusiastic acolytes is, to quote former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, this: "Sarah Palin has more executive experience than the Democratic ticket combined."

That message was tweaked out by Palin's chief vetting agent at the convention, Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle, who claims "the Democrats' presidential candidate has zero experience. He's never led any city, never led any state. So our vice-presidential candidate has more experience than their presidential candidate has."

Palin, says Lingle, "is a proven leader on local level as well as the state level, she's had a balanced budget, she's had to deal with every issue from the environment to energy and healthcare to education and public safety, and she's done it in a way that every governor does, which is: you make the final decision for which you'll be accountable.

"It's not like being in Congress, where no one might know you're responsible," argues Lingle. "When you're a governor you're the one to make a decision. It's a great, great preparation for a job such as vice president."

Fair enough. Let's accept the experience argument.

Which brings us to the question: "Mr. McCain, the argument of your campaign is that the McCain-Palin ticket should be elected because it has more executive experience than the Obama-Biden ticket. But you have no executive experience, while Sarah Palin does. So what executive role will Sarah Palin play in your administration? Will she be in charge of energy policy? Of social policy with regard to abortion and gay rights? Of foreign policy?"

And if McCain suggests that he will put Palin in charge of a task force or a study group, the follow-up must be: "But that's just writing a report. Your campaign is pinning the argument for your election on the executive advantage that Sarah Palin brings to the ticket. So, again, what job will this essential executive have in your administration?"

  1. That IS a good question, Mr Nichols.

Make McCain DECLARE what Palin's SPECIFIC role as Veep will be...and then see where she stands on that issue or policy.

Energy?...and then bring up how she cancelled wind farm projects.

Social policy?...and then point out her exteme views on abortion or on creationism or ...even better..."abstinence-only sex education"?

    Foreign policy?....

    uh...

    ROFLMAO!!!!.....

    excuse me....

Earmarks?....and then ask which "Bridge to Nowhere" she opposed...and which she supported?

Garbage collection and parks and playgrounds?....sure. That'll work, that's the kind of executive experience she had as Mayor of Wasilla.

Too bad the Fed has little work there for her.

  13. I agree with the premise of the story, but it will never work. We need to see Palin in a one-on-one interview without the shock troops there to block the hard questions. Palin needs to be scheduled on the Sunday morning political shows and then sit down for an interview wih the NY Times, Los Angeles Times, and Chicago Tribune.

There is no excuse for trying to hide the nominee from the public. We all know McCain is affraid the American people will get a good look at her views and past before the election.

We know that McCain would never let Palin be interviewed by The Nation, but how about the networks and big national daily newspapers? Where is McCain's courage? Where is his resolve? Where is the transparency he promised in his speech?

Okay, maybe McCain is just affraid. But, how about putting her on CNN with Larry King. Is McCain cowering to Larry King too?

  14. Hello crabwalk,

    You said:

    --- "Buffalo Bills eh?

Explains something about you, SJ. Who needs defense when you go on the offense? I bet your opinion is that they actually won those four Super Bowls." ---

Actually it doesn't explain anything, crabwalk. The explanation is that I hate the morons who wound up being the NFL Super Bowl champions this past year.

I am looking forward to the completion of the next Super Bowl. I am a fan of da Bears and also the Baltimore Ravens, but right now I want some other team, ANY other team, to be the NFL Champions instead of the morons who are the champions now.

But what is wrong with Buffalo, anyway? One of the four Super Bowls they lost was lost to the morons, but how many teams have even come that close. There are some teams who still have never been to the Super Bowl.

And Buffalo was an OK place to be from and have pride in for Tim Russert. He was a big time Bills fan.

And I might as well get an economic zinger in here as well. It has been an article of faith for those on the left to trumpet how lousy the economy is (as they proclaim), that we are in a recession, etc., all blamed by them on George W. Bush.

But a few months ago I was reading the Buffalo News and there was an article in the business section that the economy in Western New York was NOT in a recession.

So the economic calamity libs proclaim is before us has not hit Buffalo!

Maybe you and other libs need to re-think your perspective about Buffalo, or the economy, or both.

  16. Hmm One was just pondering the profound question of Ms. Palins's creds and the type of job she could have in the Mc Cain autocracy. Suddenly One realized that she would be perfectly suited to be Grand Inquisitor in the revived Holy Office --uprooting ungodliness in all of its many and nefarious forms. Of course the very thought of it would incite the most elaborate ecstasies from the likes of the good Dr. Dobson, America's self -appointed Savaranola.

And if Madame Palin isn't worn out by day doing the lord's work, no doubt she and the robotronic heiress, the good witch Cindy, can find something equally kinky to do by night in the White house dungeon with the exalted and supremely moral leadership of the right wing juggernaut.

What's the difference between a dominatrix and a pit bull? Lipstick. And possibly a whip. One can hope.

  17. This whole executive experience meme is a lot like how time in a Hanoi prison makes McCain a foreign policy expert. George Bush had twice as much executive experience as Sarah Palin, both as governor of Texas and as head of his failed oil exploration outfits. And then there was Cheney at Halliburton. Perhaps someone should ask McCain how that's going.

  19. I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone to point out the obvious blunder from Alaska's favorite pin-up girl. Blathering about her executive experience, such as it is, sure made McCaim look like a dolt. He's never been in charge of anything accept for the four planes he crashed. Yes, a real American hero...thanks to his father. Any other American would have been grounded after the first crash.

The Republicans have fouled up this country so badly over the past 8 years that we can ill afford to have, yet more, reckless, God-driven agendas and people at the helm any longer. Should these two get elected, the world will then be thoroughly convinced that this once, great nation has completely lost its collective mind.

    Petition text provided below:

Dear Senator McCain, Governor Palin and McCain campaign advisers:

We request you provide the citizens of the United States with the opportunity to see Governor Palin interviewed by a variety of news media outlets.

This election is a crucial one to us in terms of a wide range of domestic and foreign policy issues. Given the current concerns about numerous topics including health care, the rise in unemployment, the tense relations between Russia and Georgia, and the ongoing war in Iraq, it is neither sufficient nor acceptable that we hear Governor Palin's opinions and ideas only through pre-written speeches, press releases and select interviews with "soft" and "friendly" news sources such as People magazine and Fox News.

In less than 60 days, Senator McCain and Governor Palin could be elected President and Vice President of the United States. If elected, Senator McCain will be the oldest individual to be voted into the presidency. We simply do not know enough about Governor Palin's thoughts on important and pressing national and international issues to know if she is ready to become President, should something happen to Senator McCain....[rest of text viewable by clicking link above]

  33. Frankgrits you amuse me. I have seen your post for the GOP before. You used to say how important national security was to this nation. That's wh we should not elect Obama. However Obama named Biden as his VP to reasure America: "If a crisis occurs I have foreign policy experience behind me." McCain who everyday looks older wants me to vote for him at his age and history of skin cancer. Yet if he dies instead of an experienced VP to step in. Frank you want me and other Americans to trust a woman to be Prez who other than giving one speech. Refuses to give any interviews to any press outlets and you endorse this. Obama has given countless interviews discussing his policy beliefs. He is appearing on FOX' O'Reilly all next week. Like him or not. At least Obama is out there telling America why he should be President. So is Biden who along with Obama and McCain will be on morning talk shows Sunday. Where is the so called pitbull with lipstick right now? Running for highest office you have to give it out and take it. Plus have an elephant skin. I am not saying Palin is unqualified. But unless she comes out and speaks to the media or public on her own. I question the risk of her stepping in for McCain if he should be stricken down. IT IS A LEGITIMATE CONCERN! To blow off that concern Frank tells me you sir are not a good American and are willing to put this nation's security at risk by putting someone in office who may not be fit for duty. I am not saying she is not fit for duty. I am saying I want to hear her voice unscripted. If the McCain campaign hides from this. I can only suspect my worst fears about Sarah Palin. Being concerned isnot because of me being a Democrat. I am concerned as an American. You should be to Frank! What is the McCain campaign afraid of?

Like learning what the VP is & does, for starters, as she admits she doesn't know.

Meanwhile, she can continue to interpret God's Plan for US, on the direct line to the Almighty that she shares with GWBush.

The rest of the OECD looks at the US today in disbelief & fear that these 2 corrupt fools might take over & continue the catastrophic policies of the last 8 years.

When an empire declines, it can really take a nosedive, and there is no soft landing.

"The world will little note what we say here, but will long remember what we do here." A. Lincoln's words are still meaninful, now as much as ever.

Who would ever have thought it would be possible to present visuals of the deepest controlling unconscious historical group fantasy. Sort of like Shakespear Comics condensed in real time -- if you are not relating to what it shows as the reality processed by the reptile brain (and it can be avoided by systematic repression) you are not relating to the totality of historical events completing itself before your eyes as we speak.

  48. We use our superpower status to invade powerless countries. We kidnap, capture and torture innocent bystanders to prove our strength. We spy on both our friends and our enemies. We overthrow democracies that we cannot control. We are hated in almost every country where people are free to express opinions, and our response to the disrespect we have generated around the world is with personal and racist attacks. John Nichols' article is about WHO this person is that we only a few days ago learned existed. What talents and skills will she bring to a McCain Administration? Why is she being hidden? While not every one exchanging ideas on this site are experiencing extreme difficulties, we certainly have fellow citizens who indeed are, through no fault of their own, suffering under the harmful policies of the Bush Administration. To continue these policies will not only be unpatriotic but ought to be considered criminal. History teaches us that when enough citizens realize the harm their corrupt government has done to them it is often too late. Who/What will be the force behind two unimpressive executives?

  49. The panic about Paslin on the left ..her interest lies with McCain and Palin... ...and she will(and McCain) once again have knocked Obama off the front pages.. Posted by JOMAMMA at 09/07/2008

This is not a circus, it is the future of America at stake. McCain said: "I would rather loose an election but 'win' a war". Well, the selection of Palin showed the reverse: it was only to try win the election - while selling himself on his long standing views on several issues - because they do not have anything in common but being conservatives.

Obviously standing on this selection was to gain votes on Independent or Hillary Dem women and therefore she is not answering questions on the issues tAnd about Hillary and what I know from her, her interests lie on the well-being of the American people. hat would otherwise present her as she really is. Independent 'soccer moms' care for example for social security and health insurance- which were really Hillary strongholds, not to mention Dem women that are all for it .

What I know is that Palin supports McCain's views on healthcare and those are more of the same, i.e more and more Americans dying from causes that could have been prevented.

And about Hillary her interests lie on the well-being of the American people.

In a word, this is another chess play by Reps that only aims at what they really are: liars to the American people so that issues will not be discussed in depth. This time however, evil's works won't succeed.

She just needs to be kept under wraps, on a short leash and silent, to be dragged out smiling every couple of weeks. Maybe they can send her to Cheney's undisclosed location -- and then have the location forgotten. She may be officially President of the Senate but she can do that long distance, can't she?

The very best solution is to have her be VP from Wasilla.

Based on your statements, MASK, I'm assuming you didn't do too well on your verbal SATs.

The difference between right wing crazy preachers and left wing crazy preachers is that in the first case, they may or may not endorse McCain. In the latter case, they are the intimate spiritual advisors for Obama for the last 20 years, attended voluntarily by Obama for 20 years every Sunday for a 1 hour sermon and extended voluntary social activities, and discarded only when they became politically inconvenient. Does that help?

Again, when it comes to husbands and voluntary associations with known domestic terrorists - well, I guess you'll have to think about that one for awhile and figure out what the difference is.

Giggle away, giggle boy. According to the latest polls, McCain/Palin has taken a 10 percent lead amongst likely voters. Another one of my fearless predictions is coming true, to the consternation and gnashing of teeth of the cyanide imbibers.

And people absolutely LOVE Sarah Palin! It's all very cool. I haven't seen such an admirable woman since I saw those two gold medal volleballers at the Olympics thank President Bush for the job he's done. Hopefully, these women will be the future of this country, and 'God Damn America', 'the government invented AIDS and drugs to kill black people', and 'the first time I was proud of my country was when they nominated my husband for President' will all be a distant, sad memory, fodder for perplexed historians.

  66. Posted by pontificus at 09/08/2008 @ 12:02pm

1- So you're thinking McCain/Palin maintain a 10 point lead until November 4th? If not, then what does it matter NOW, seven weeks before the election? And I assume you're betting on NO Obama/Biden leads in any major polling?

2- NO, the American people have a "positive view" of Palin NOW....only you in the Hard Right "absolutely LOVE" Sarah because she's a die-hard Righty and you were disgusted with having to vote for McCain.

That view MAY change as she comes under press scrutiny and if it does, you (obviously) won't lessen your ardor for her or think she might not be the best candidate for the job....but "blame the Liberal Media for sexism and bias!!!!!!!!"

    3. Again, what would Sarah Palin answer to the question-

"Governor, do you support the re-election bid of your fellow Alaskan Republican, Senator Ted Stevens?"

Simple, no tricks....except there IS a problem no matter how she answers!

and THAT is the only difference.

and NO...the Alaskan separatists are calling on Alaska to SECEDE from the union.....

while, and I know this may strain your "I know my talking points and I'm sticking to them regardless of the facts".....there WERE and ARE white members of the Trinity United Church of Christ.

Hmm. I can tell you a story about a hard working single mother. Who had a decent job and was working her ass off to pay for her kids life. She then got fired because of mass layoffs because a company was moving their production overseas. She tried her hardest to find another job but because she came from a poor family she was never well educated. She went on welfare for a little bit so her family could afford to eat and have heat. She accepted Medicare so that her children wouldn't die of a simple and treatable disease. She then found a new job and managed to work her way back off of it to support her family.

You know the difference between our examples Darin? Yours is a minority, mine is the majority of people on welfare. You have bought a lie is essentially the difference.

Essentially what you are telling us is that spoiled rich kids, meaning most of the Republican "elite", who have never had to work for a dime of their money should not be allowed to have their lives payed for by their parents because they don't know the value of a dollar and are more than willing to exploit the system to get what they "deserve".
