Inside Palin's Politics

posted by Katrina vanden Heuvel on 09/05/2008 @ 09:27am

Wednesday night I did a CBS Webcast with Katie Couric and sparred with Republican strategist Barbara Comstock over Sarah Palin -- what she represents and where she would lead the country. Old-fashioned as I may be, I argued that "this is a big election about big issues. And while Palin's story is compelling... at the same time on the core issues so central to millions of women in this country -- Sarah Palin talked about 'every woman should have the opportunity to go through every door' -- well, you don't if you adopt the agenda of John McCain and Sarah Palin." You can watch the entire webcast here:

  1. Again, best strategy against Palin?

    KHT.....Keep Her Talking!

She SEEMS smooth and in control, but she also seems like the type that if she starts speaking extemporaneously....eventually the Nutty Right-wing Stuff will start flowing out....and be on YouTube an hour later...and "The Daily Show" six hours after that.

Then Obama and Biden and the Dems just say "Governor Palin said what??!?!?"

And wait for Palin to try to "walk it back"....McCain to try to "explain it"....and after a few times, she makes Quayle (and "Murphy Brown", "potatoe", and "canals on Mars") look like William F. Buckley Jr.

    .

Sound advice...that also happens to apply equally to McCain. The more he talks, the greater the chance of a stupid blunder...

...or better yet, a flash of the old McCain temper!

  3. The post-Palin speech fundraising suggests that Palin is actually ENERGIZING THE PROGRESSIVE BASE more than she is energizing the Republicans.

The more progressives hear about Palin's beliefs and record the more motivated they are to defeat the McCain/Palin ticket.

  4. Won't the debates be interesting? I'm not impressed with Obama away from his prepared speeches. I've always enjoyed Biden on CSPAN, especially when I've disagreed with him, which is most of the time. McCain is relatively unknown to me, but he seems to be liked by our 'balanced' mainstream media. Well, at least he was before he gained the Republican nomination. And Sarah Palin is the left's worst nightmare.

I'm with mask. Keep 'em all talking!

  5. One problem that McCain has because of the Palin choice is that she provides us gossip loving Americans with tons and tons of fresh gossip and that puts the old gossip about Rev. Wright etc. on the back burner while everyone looks at the new scandals and potential scandals. It will be difficult for the GOP to get us to focus back on Obama stuff because that was played to death during the primaries and we,now, have new and fun gossip to enjoy and explore.

    great.

    what about this:

The shortfalls Obama would produce don't approach the size of the deficits John McCain's budget threatens to bring. THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE'S TAX CUTS ALONE WOULD INCREASE THE DEBT BY $5 TRILLION BY 2018, COMPARED WITH $3.4 TRILLION FOR OBAMA, says the Tax Policy Center, another nonpartisan group.

why won't anybody (right is righters that is) comment on this?

No, McCain's smoother than that. And he's been through the ringer a few times (2000 and this year)...he knows how to hold it together.

Plus, as shown last night with HIS version of "kinder, gentler America"...he's going to be the "moderate one" and let Palin throw the red meat.

But that's the danger for the Repubs....she's never been out in the spotlight that much. Never run for an office that required her to win over mover than 350,000 people and most of them pretty conservative Alaskans.

She may find what "plays in Alaska", doesn't play in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan or even Virginia....and when she's swamped by MSNBC, CNN, etc. with "Governor, did you REALLY mean _______?"....she may get a rude awakening.

  11. at least one righty got it

"Dan Quayle Was Right about Murphy Brown

In 1992 Dan Quayle made a courageous speech about moral values. He knew the liberal media would make fun of him but he stood his ground. He rightly criticized the TV series Murphy Brown for the immoral message it was sending to America's youth.

After several seasons, the series' star, TV journalist Murphy Brown (played by Candace Bergen) became pregnant out of wedlock. The child's father refused to marry her, so she decided to have the baby and raise it as a single parent.

Liberals and elitists tried to put this in a "positive" light, since after all she decided not to have an abortion. I myself was one of those naïve idealists back then. In those days I hadn't found Jesus yet, and I just couldn't imagine what all those simple Biblewipes were so upset about.

But Dan Quayle stepped up to the plate. He braved the hatred and ridicule that he knew would be heaped on him by the elitists. He warned us that Murphy Brown was setting a terrible example. From now on, he thundered, it would be perfectly acceptable to have a child out of wedlock. This abominable sin would no longer carry any sort of guilt or stigma, and America's moral fiber would be ruined.

They laughed at him, but sixteen years later Dan Quayle has been vindicated. We should have heeded his warning. Just look at the filth our country is wallowing in. It's everywhere!

Just to demonstrate how this immoral sludge has been oozing into every corner of America, let's take a completely random example. We'll zero in on a typical Middle American family …OK, we've found a family in a small town in Alaska. Both parents are gainfully employed and they have five children. One of their children is seventeen years old and -- GASP! -- she's PREGNANT!

    Posted by crabwalk at 09/05/2008 @ 10:45am

  12. "... Out of wedlock!

This is a disgrace! God have mercy. This is exactly what Dan Quayle warned us about sixteen years ago, and nobody listened. Are we happy now?!?!?!?!

Well, we can be grateful for one small favor: there probably isn't anybody in this anonymous family who's famous or has any sort of political ambitions."

  14. [ST. PAUL, Minn. -- People: Make up your minds.

For two days, the chorus from Republicans on TV news and in the halls of the convention has been resounding: Back off and let the Palin family be. "That's out of bounds," said Minnesota's Republican governor, Tim Pawlenty. "There's no need to be intrusive and pry into that."

Yet Wednesday found the following scenes unfolding:

    • Sarah Palin's pregnant, unmarried 17-year-old daughter and probable future son-in-law stood in a nationally televised, politically packaged airport receiving line to meet and greet the Republican candidate for president.

    • The extremely cute and bubbly Piper Palin, 7, made her debut on her mother's behalf, appearing in a video on John McCain's daughter's blog. "Vote for my mommy and John McCain," she said, giggling as Meghan McCain grinned.

    • Bristol Palin and her 18-year-old boyfriend, Levi Johnston, joined the narrative together at the convention Wednesday night. They sat and held hands as they watched the Alaska governor deliver an acceptance speech that, in its opening minutes, focused heavily on her family and children.

I find it to be completely within McCain's character (as a panderer) and within the ideological framework of the Republican party (impossibly arrogant hypocrites) to nominate such a person.

  23. As much as new con repubs would like to paint Sarah Palin in a Ronald Reagan picture frame, in truth Palin is really a portrait more likened to Clarence Thomas' without a law degree; just a BS in Communications.

Yet like Clarence, Sarah is where she is because of the liberalism that she so denounces. She's all ideology and no nuanced humanty.

What may be different is that Sarah, unlike Clarence, understands the use of verbal facade, propaganda. Sarah will attempt to mask her ideology as attack and not clarity.

Joe Biden will have to be like a very sharp needle and burst that bubble otherwise Sarah will ride her own hot wind.

    Posted by 2HAPPY at 09/05/2008 @ 12:15pm |

Thank you for making my point.

McCain caved to the numbskull wing of the Republican party in nominating Palin.

If he really were to be the maverick you wish he was, McCain would have nominated Lieberman and told the evangelicals to shove it in doing so.

By the way, "misunderestimate" isn't a word, it's a George W. Bush neologism.

    The rumor is this...

Upto two weeks ago, Karl Rove and the Establishment Repubs (all hard-core cons) wanted Mitt Romney....

McCain was HEAVILY leaning to Lieberman.

Rove supposedly called Joe the Schmoe and not-so-subtlely threatened him that if he didn't publicly take his name out of consideration, Rove promised the base would bolt and McCain lose handily.

Lieberman instead told McCain...who got pissed, and not picking Lieberman (because he knew Rove could make good on the base abandoning him)...but ALSO not wanting to reward Rove by picking Romney...

went with Palin...and she was WAY down on the Short List and therefore not fully vetted...hence "Bristol"..."the Alaskan Independence Party"..."Walt Monegan"....and "the Bridge to Nowhere" contradictions.

    How about this:

    1. Palin anti-abortion position is too extreme for America in that she opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest and would FORCE this view on the rest of America.

    2. Palin and her husband flirts with succession from the United States as "affiliates" of AIP party.

    3. Palin attempts to ban library books she doesn't like and fire the city librarian if she doesn't go along.

    4. Palin fires police chief of Wassila because he wants the bars to close at 2am rather than 5am and this upset Palin's bar owner campaign contributors.

    5. Palin fires her chief public safety officer, the former police chief of Anchorage, because he doesn't want to be used in her family feud in firing the ex-husband of her sister.

    6. Palin's car wash was "involuntarily" shut down after she skipped out of paying her taxes and fees, and failed to file required financial statements.

    7. Palin's pastor of 30 years thinks political opponents of Bush won't go to heaven and that Jesus is some kind of war general that kills people that don't believe in him.

    8. Palin stripped funds from Passage House, a group that helps teen moms, LIKE HER DAUGHTER, get skills and lead productive lives after pregnancy.

    9. Palin hired an Abramoff lobbyist to get earmarks that even McCain objected to

    10. Palin SUPPORTED Bridge-to-Nowhere, and only opposed it after public exposure.

    11. Palin inflates her foreign policy experience by claiming a refueling stop as a "visit to Ireland".

    12. Palin does NOT believe that pollution and carbon emissions contribute to global warming and climate change.

  55. From Washington Post:

Palin's gubernatorial disclosure filings also reveal her involvement in another failed startup -- a marketing business which was to go by the name Rouge Cou, which evidently is a literal French translation of "red neck." On the 2005 form, Palin describes the firm as one for which she secured a license but did not conduct any business.

I don't know much about the code, since I didn't grow up in the South, and none of my black friends has ever hipped me to it.

I have lived in Alaska and know for sure that they play ALL of the American sports there and that Palin and her kids played ALL of those sports (except women usually don't play football).

Basketball was clearly the most popular because it was indoor and all schools had a gym.

Palin and her speech writers are much more politically savvy than you are giving them credit, as they are clearly speaking to a "specific" demographic in code with the hockey mom reference which is NOT the same group as the soccer mom.

Soccer moms are more upscale and suburban and mostly white, but not necessarily white, whereas hockey moms are strictly white blue-collar working class people.

And yes, the part about bar chatter is not paranoia - I have heard it many times all across America how blacks have taken over basketball so "we" don't watch that anymore; and how they can "never" take over hockey because that is "our" sport!

At least with W., he would feign Christian fundamentalism to appeal to the Republican base, but ACTED in accordance with his marching orders from the MIC, Big Oil, and AIPAC.

I live in the town next door to Wasilla (since 1974). Palin's just shown us she's just another politician in that fabulous speech at the convention. Rove's Robot did just what the Bush machine wanted.

Alaskan's who blindly follow Palin are called Palinbots or Palinistas up here. Forget the base, go after the fence-sitters out there. Start with all those faith-based community organizers she just blew off as worthless and laughable.

You know. Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, AARP, after school volunteers who play sports with

young men who might otherwise get into trouble, tutors for homeless kids, those wonderful folks who are a phone call away from some home-bound senior or disabled person that can get them to a doctor or take them shopping or just be there to listen and give comfort.

And get some facts under your belt about Obama's legislative record. It's pretty impressive and freely available in the Congressional record.

Read - To Those Who Question Obama's "Legislative Accomplishments" at www.agonist.org. By Bob Geiger

If you're too lazy to hunt down the Congressional record you could start with Rochelle Reynosa'a blog on the my.barackobama.com site and verify her results. Nuclear proliferation, ethics, sex offenders, domestic violence, support for reproductive rights, veteran's health and employment rights, I could go on. But, he's been more prolific than McSame and is nearly as prolific as Clinton. http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/blog/rochellereynosa

    ALASKADIVA,

When I was 16, I lived in Eagle River, Alaska on upper Fire Lake. Are you near there?

I think the strategy in the tossup states is to target swing voters with targeted ads, and the Obama campaign is doing a great job of that by hitting on bread and butter issues and other issues that matter to these voters.

On sites like this, it is important that progressive voters understand what is at stake by having an extreme right-winger like Palin a heartbeat away from a 72-year-old president who has had constant battles with cancer.

    Scary!

Obama has a multi-faceted strategy with much of it targeting the 12 toss up states that will decide this election.

But energizing the progressive base is also important as is raising money to run all of those targeted ads.

  92. Palmer, AK. . ..Lazy Mtn.

Palin states that life begins with conception, but, abortion is ok if the mother's life is in danger.

Sorry, but, you can't hold those two ideas at the same time. Pick one and run with it or join the hypocrite squad.

She goes on, in her Eagle Forum questionnaire, to say that the unborn shouldn't pay for our mistakes. No mention of rape victims.

Sorry, but, if a woman is violently tortured, beaten, stabbed, etc. within an inch of her life and impregnated to boot is that a 'MISTAKE'? !

How many husband's would accept a daily reminder in a child the result of such a violent crime?

How many teen siblings would be able to treat that child fairly?

How many relationships and families would Sarah be willing to sacrifice on the altar of her authoritarian viewpoint?

But....that's a minor part of what's at stake.

Why not avoid this prospect altogether by keeping government out of the decision-making of a woman and her body?

Republicans like to TALK about keeping the government out of your business, but when the rubber meet the road, they can't wait to let the government into your bedroom, relationships, and personal decisions that conflict with their own "personal" religious choice and values based on their own backward fundamentalist Christian ideology and interpretation.

Why not just say I believe this, but I am not going to FORCE my beliefs on you through the government because I don't want you to FORCE your beliefs on me? In other words, treat people with the same respect that you would want to be treated, as this is the essence of teh Greatest Commandment.

Do you really think Jesus Christ would accept a person who was FORCED to believe in him?

If not, then quit this idea of FORCING "your" Christian values on others.

    Posted by Metteyya at 09/05/2008 @ 7:39pm

  94. Why not avoid this prospect altogether by keeping government out of the decision-making of a woman and her body?

Well said. If the woman wants to murder her unborn child she should have that right. No tax dollars, no government regulation, no planned parenthood subsidies. Nothing. A decision between a woman and her doctor. Get government 100% OUT of this issue!

    Posted by freiheit1 at 09/05/2008 @ 7:56pm<<<

What I am saying is I may think a "child" is not a child until quickening, someone else may think it is a child at conception, and another may think this is based on being "independent" from another body.

Why is it necessary for the government to decide?

Every person has a conscience and has to live with the consequences of their decisions, so why not be grown-ups about it and say since no one is God and we have various religious beliefs - some that may not even require God - that as long as the fetus is within the body of another, the mother gets to decide based on "their" values whether to carry the fetus to term?

Why should government pick one religion or religious interpretation over another?

I have always thought Freedom of Religion was the strongest legal argument against the anti-abortion position, but we don't seem to get it that Americans have a right to chose their own religion or whether to have a religion at all.

    re: "books" per Time magazine

[Former Wasilla mayor] Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." The librarian, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire her for not giving "full support" to the mayor.

  98. why are they claiming the Maverick mantel. McCain's acceptance speech sounded like Bush on steroids and little Ms. Palin sounded like a Republican clone. Mr. maverick would really be upset at having his name used by such a dishonest crew. Mr. Maverick refused to brand his cattle, because he felt that it was cruel. The other ranchers felt that he just wanted to claim any of their cattle that hadn't been branded. Senator McCain is just hiding his brand under the cows tail.

  99. Part of the problem with some comments here is this reality: Palin is helping McCain RIGHT NOW!! Nation is a left leaning mag so of course most people here are going to criticize Palin. I myself have been supporting Obama from beginning. I donated money to him last nite. BUT criticizing Palin is not the answer. Don't be delusional. After the last 8 and 2 elections this Palin could propel McCain into whitehouse. A certain segment of the population wants someone in the whitehouse that they can relate to. Nevermind their qualifications. Even if it's phony BS (see Bush). My brother was for Hillary and to his credit he warned me that what is happening now is what the GOP would do if Obama was the nominee. I think Obama will be a good President but he was a risky choice compared to Hillary. Howver he out campaigned and out maneuvered her. Win or lose I think his nomination was worth the risk. I understand but don't necessary agree with the Obama strategy dealing with palin. I would not put all my money on Biden hurting her in the V debate. The GOP will have her prepared. It's not just Palin. GOP power brokers who have been wringing there hands over the likey eection loss now see an opportunity and smell blood. That's why I don't think the Obama campaign can just ignore Pailn. I understand the thinking. It's obvious the GOP campaign is trying to bait Obama. On other hand The GOP is ridiculing the strategy comparing Obama to a lion stepping around a turtle and not knowing what to do with it. The Obbama campaign cannot just scoff at the talking points by the GOP about Palin's qualificatiions and expect the voting public to see thru the BS because there is a segment of voters who will vote for her because they like or relate to her; Nevermind her extremist views. To be continued.

  100. I apologize for some typos in my above post. Now Palin is a right wing fantasy candidate. If McCain wins I would be careful what I eat around Palin. Dems better hope he stays healthy too. Despite his campaign I don't think GOP righties will be happy with McCain. If he wins and gets the job. I think he will discard some of the kiss-ass to the right. It will be just sad to see gOP win this election with where the country is right now. DEMS will pick up more congressional seats and if McCain does suck. I believe DEMS will reach the filibuster level in senate in 2010. Dems would then control the legislation. Back to Palin... The strategy I think Obama campaign can attract Palin without attacking her directly. VOICE her political views to the public. Let everyone know while she is an impressive person who you respect with a compelling life story. Palin's political views are to the extreme of middle americans. Which is not an attack but fact. Also with the oil dividends Alaskans recieve. Is that not a windfall tax on oil companies? Which Obama has pushed? I know Obama has the female govenors + Hillary going out next week to campaign. Fact is Obama is going to raise the taxes on the most wealthy in this country. They don't like that and just like 92 when Bill Clinton said he would raise taxes on upper class. The GOP came after him hard as they will with Obama. This election is important. Obama may have to swallow his pride and ask ex-clinton campaign staff for ideas on how to deal with Palin. They have experience with GOP bs. As long as Obama stays ahead or even in polls I think he can outlast Palin. But if he gets behind. It could spell doom which would lead to McCain claiming an upset. A bitter pill indeed to swallow.

  101. REDRIVER It is amazing!! Where are you at? Do you not see what the GOP has brought this country the last 8 years? I am not anti-GOP. BUT what has happened to the GOP party? It is controlled by right wingers whose only goal is to divide and win! Not to help the country unless you call protecting the filthy rich helping the country. The economic malaise in this country is directly the responsibility of the Republican party. HOW you say. Deregulation for one lead to lack of oversite in the financial markets. The bush economy was based on the ownership society. Keep wages low and taxes low for companies. This lead to high corporate profits. If wages low where do consumers get $ to buy the products companies make. Why encourage the public to buy a home which the GOP lead FED opened the money supply allowing for easy home loans to public. The public then was encouraged to take out home equity loans at low rates. This started putting everyone in debt but at time gave them cash to keep economy humming along. Then of course the subprime loaners and housing bubble began. Since GOP looks down on government and encourages free markets to control things. Lack of oversight lead to the subprime loans being packaged off as AAA+ securities when they were in fact risky investments. When housing bubble started to pop and the subprime higher interests kicked in. The high risk loanees who never should have gotten a home loan then became deadbeats leading to foreclosure. This in effect lead to the investors of phony securities to stop buying them leading to the billion dollar losses by banks which in turn lead them to cut off lending to people with good credit. This is what has lead to the lousy economy and job losses. Thanks to the GOP economic views. Yet you want 4 more years? Amazing!!

  102. Not only that RED!!! Now everyone is in debt up to their eyeballs. OH except the filthy rich who made a killing the last 8 years. Well congrats to them. But it's time to swing the pendulum back the other way. I don't harbor resentment to wealthy people. I do however recognize that raising the tax rate to the Clinton years will not kill anyone because the economy hummed along in the 90's However the government might have been able to help more or strenthened the dollar if we weren't spending Billions and Billions in Iraq. A war that never should have been waged and when it was... It was planned disastorously. When you listen to Obama you don't listen to him. You filter in what you want to here. O'reilly of all people mentioned to Obama about Iraq paying some of that money back. Obama said "hey they have $79 Billion in surplus." The comments that Obama said Iran was a small country leading to belief he doesn't consider Iran a threat. Obama never said that. He said compared to the Soviet Union who this country negotiated with and was called an evil empire by Reagan. Compared to them Iran is a small country. Obama's point being that if we negotiated with a so called evil empire who had nukes galore. Why can't we try diplomatic efforts with Iran. Obama doesn't want Iran to have a nuclear weapon anymore then McCain does. This country can not even afford to go to war with Iran thanks to lost leverage due to the Iraq war. You Republicans are so FREAKING ATE UP. You spread lies about what a candidate says. Your just so damn NARROW MINDED! Why won't you open your mind? When I listen to Obama I think "he makes alot of sense on issues." What does Palin think? Oh we don't know do we? Palin better be put on the Sunday morning shows and asked tough questions before 11-4!!!!!!

Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla[1] (born July 1, 1977, in St. Albert, Alberta), is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and team captain for the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League. A first round draft pick of the Dallas Stars in 1995, Iginla was later traded to Calgary, and has played his entire professional career with the Flames. He is the Flames all-time leader in goals scored and games played. Iginla was named the Flames captain at the start of the 2003–04 season, the first black captain in NHL history.

As a junior, Iginla was a member of two Memorial Cup winning teams as Canadian major-junior champions, and was named the Western Hockey League's Player of the Year in 1996. Iginla has led the NHL in goals twice, and has scored 50 goals in a season twice. In 2002, Iginla helped Team Canada win its first gold medal at the Winter Olympics in 50 years. Iginla also won the Lester B. Pearson Award as the league's Most Valuable Player as voted by the players, and finished second in voting for the Hart Memorial Trophy. In 2004, Iginla led the Flames to the Stanley Cup Finals, leading the league in playoff scoring.

(to be honest, i hadn't realized he was black. had to look at lots of photos. another HALF AND HALF FREAK for HAPPY.)

  105. Levi Johnston is the father of Bristol Palin's baby. The 17-year-old hockey player at Burchell High School in Wasilla, Alaska, is by all accounts soon to be married to the Republican vice presidential candidate's daughter, but all may not be well. His MySpace page revealed juicy details about his outlook on life before he made it private. In it, he admits, "I'm a f**kin' redneck who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes. But I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some sh*t and just f**kin' chillin' I guess. Ya f*ck with me I'll kick ass."

After all the publicity, Levi Johnston's MySpace was redacted, revealing no evidence of his previous profanity laden macho posturing. Although he admits that he is in a relationship, he still says that he wants to use MySpace "for networking or for dating." Moreover, on the subject of possible children, he left the message, "Love kids, but not for me." Most devastatingly, in a sharp contrast to the Palin family's conservative views, Levi instead posts that he is an agnostic.

The Levi Johnston-Bristol Palin marriage-to-be may yet not be, despite assurances from the Palin campaign. Their baby is due in four more months so the nuptials can't be delayed much longer.

So, what's the big deal, you ask:

    (1) The McCain Campaign's abject failure to discover the existence of this page, and 86 it before publically identifying Palin as running mate. In Hollywood, secret agents permanently delete files of their "assets" and other damning information, with such extreme prejudice, it's like they never existed. Political campaigns presumably have a similar capacity, especially when it comes to myspace pages. I mean, how many people have both the duimb luck and foresight to (con't)

  106. download Levi's patently pedestrian page before last week's runaway train was both christened and irreversibly derailed railed.

Even an internet neophyte is cognizant of Myspace's popularity. Surely, all of us who religiously read our local newspaper's on-line edition recall the several fatal victims of crime and car wrecks whose myspace link is invariably posted in the comments section within a hour or two after their identities are publically revealed. The same for notorious local scofflaws.

Rank amateurs!!! Base and primitive neophytes!!!!

    No?

And the same fu*k-ups will be staffing the White House and other major governmental entities and agencies, in important supervisory roles, no less, should McCain win. Remember Monica Goulding? Remember "You're doing a great job, Brownie?"

    (2) While it is sometimes dangerous, presumptuous and unfair to postulate---without secret agent truth serum--the theoretically unknown and unknowable intent and motivations racing through the minds of others, you can't help but think this: Hmmm, typical 17 year old Red Neck Boy: Loves to cuss, play sports, down a few brews, arm wrestle, fight, and get a little trim. But marriage and kids? No way, no how.

So who is perpetrating and perpetuating this distinctly plausible, possible, probable and arguable lie that Bristol and Levi are deeply in love, and want to live happily ever after?. Shot gun wedding? Nah, too crude. If Sarah is anything, she's a cunning playa. Swiss bank account wedding, conveniently cancelled–can you hear "Church Lady"--after the election, and thereafter eternally irrelevant? Four years later, its old news. Remember Monica the Maydela? The Cigar? The Dress? Old hat, except for, perhaps the most (cont)

Even if he endured with honor -- as good or better than most, I suppose; and we do not know if he were implanted or not -- he may have less resistance to strain, requireing a lot of 'humouring' to keep from croaking on the spot when given hard news. 118. On CNN this morning I saw the most fascinating segment featuring Maureen Dowd. They were discussing whether or not Palin has been treated fairly by the media.

Well, Maureen Dowd made some of the most INCREDIBLE proclamations!

Dowd Epiphany #1: MEN AND WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT. Yes, according to Dowd it's true after all. This fact helps to justify differences in coverage of male vs. female candidates, just to let you know. So all you gals out there need to remember this the next time you buck for a raise or a promotion. You need to remember this before you ask silly questions like "why am I not paid the same as a man?", or "Why aren't there more female CEO's?". Women carry the burden of pregnancy and childbirth. This unalterable fact of nature sets a specific limit on the professional growth potential of women. To seek to surpass this limit is to thumb your nose at Nature Herself. As if you could exceed the speed of light or alter the physics that govern our universe.

Dowd Epiphany #2: DON'T THINK ABOUT BREAKING THE GLASS CEILING! That's right, ladies, under certain circumstances you are prohibited from reaching your potential. In Dowd's opinion, mothers of minor children are not capable of holding offices of power. So that's it. Now we know the limitations of the Women's Movement and feminism. Us fellas, guys, are the only truly unfettered beings. Absolutely nothing stands in our way!

Let's hear it for the guys! And let's hear it for Maureen Dowd for finally getting her silly head straight!

  126. If Hillary supporters really care about the policies she stands for vote Obama, and not vote hormonally. She torpedoed her own campaign by running a bad campaign. I mean read some of the posts out there, you think a black man got a better shake than Hillary. The only reason she wasn't drummed out of the race in March, like any other candidate male or female would have been, is because the press loves talking about the Clintons...the male and the female. She couldn't win past March and she put herself in debt knowing that. I mean she didn't even run her campaign decisively. But that's Obama's fault. I see.

Please wake up and check into Palin, you'll be helping to elect the Anti-Hillary.

Is it sexist to expect a VP candidate to go on Meet the Press like her male counterpart would've already done? Why didn't McCain pick a more qualified Republican woman, given that there are dozens? I guess he likes former beauty queens. If she were a man she would've been torn apart by now with her record. What's really sexist?

  128. Okay imagine this as the voice of Walter Cronkite...

"Sarah Palin, VP wanna' be rode in on her moose (before she shot it) and with the wit of her six-gun teleprompter, lit up a crowd eager to divide Americans on the pettiest of issues. While the United States of America circles the drain, they want to have another 4 years to prove once and for all their complete lack of competence on any conceivable level. I'm sure the thing that concerns Ms. Palin most is finding anyone who dropped a flag at Envesco Field, lining them up against a wall, and giving us all an example of her expert marksmanship. Just to show off, she might even do it...from a helicopter."

Maybe she plans on suffocating McCain on his inauguration night, then hatching her and her husband's plan of moving the capital to Alaska, and seceding from the Union.
