It's a media rule by now that at the tail end of a campaign, we get the story about the leading candidate's "body man." That is, the personal aide who shadows the candidate and anticipates everything he or she needs. And lo and behold, there it was this Tuesday-- a New York Times cover story about Senator Barack Obama's "body man" Reggie Love.
Love the name. Worthy of a character out of Faulkner, Dickens or Morrison.
It seems that Love played football and basketball at Duke, graduated with a degree in political science and public policy and then had summer try-outs with the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys before getting cut. Now he's the man who watches over Obama as he campaign 36/7.
What struck me is how Love and Obama keep sane on the trail. Playing basketball, out of superstition, every primary day. And here's the kicker: " From Mr. Obama: 'One cardinal rule of the road is, we don't watch CNN, the news or MSNBC. We don't watch any talking heads or any politics. We watch 'SportsCenter' and argue about that."
Smart rules of the road.
I participate in some of these cable shows, and when I do, I'm usually glad I have a day job. It's probably wise for Obama to tune so much of the blather out there. though some of these shows, what with their horserace nature, might just be mistaken for ESPN's "SportsCenter."

Well, well Bush fondler lovebirdie McClellan pens:
"What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception"
Nice all around. The Rush-hated, neocon-hated 911 Commission's "failure of imagination" is echoed here as
"lack of inquisitiveness"
A lack alive and well as demonstrated by our very own neo's here.
Though they've quietly toned down the 8 year dittohead mantra-rant that "liberals are unAmerican", they've slipped into a new form of what W-polyp sucking ultra insider McClellan calls a "permanent campaign": it's a "permanent ANTIcampaign": not really for anything, just against all day and night. It's not too sophisticated, pretty much = Obama-is-bad!!
And boy are the rednecks in Penn, Indy 'n West Virginy responding. Nothing like a simple hate message to keep them goose stepping to Ol' Glory.
Worked in 2000 and even more remarkably in 2004.

Oh! Basketball, Sportscenter --
That's racist and elitist and out of touch and Muslim and proves he lacks experience and has a secret plan to unleash something far worse than AIDS on whitie like collards!
Posted by winyahn at 05/27/2008 @ 4:12pm
Katrina, I admit I love hearing your soothing alto and calm demeanor on some of the talking heads shows. But my opinion is they don't pay enough for you to lower yourself by appearing on them. I have seen them just bulldoze and bully you in the middle of a point and it's honestly frustrating. Now that you know Obama's not watching, it might wane your enthusiam for their blather.
Posted by yutsano at 05/27/2008 @ 5:37pm
Yes to yutsano. I get damn sick of it, and you can tell them before they put you on there are bloggers out there who will absolutely come see them about it if they don't stfu with the interruptions, and let you lay out points. They are scared of us, you know, and that's not because we pose any mortal, physical threat, but because of the existential they deserve, and know it.
They expect you to crumple under, like a Nancy (but with stiffened lip - god) ... or to lay the Knuckle on Them, like Herr Hill (and we all wish you would do more of that, but you stick with your guns, which are formidable).
Here's one thing, though:
-make lists of double talk you can anticipate and turn to the audience with a hand-to-mouth "there's another one" smoot when one comes out. Then rattle them to the core with some dynamite connection to Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull (maybe, "Hey! That's MY mother you are talking about!", if they go off on suffering kids in katrina trailors -- smiley). Make 'em sweat (and pay you to do it). You got game.

Careful Benchrest, picked Collard greens in the summer are pretty bitter and tough to eat (they're chewy). You should try them in late Fall or early Winter. A good first frost makes them more tender and brings out a sweeter flavor.

Posted by Benchrest at 05/28/2008 @ 1:01pm
The pokeweeds, also known as poke, pokebush, pokeberry, pokeroot, polk salad, polk sallet, inkberry or ombú, comprise the genus Phytolacca, perennial plants native to North America, South America, East Asia and New Zealand. Pokeweed contains phytolaccatoxin and phytolaccigenin, which are poisonous to mammals. However, the berries are eaten by birds, which are not affected by the toxin because the small seeds with very hard outer shells remain intact in the digestive system and are eliminated whole.
once step below rhubarb......
try this instead:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portulaca_oleracea
Purslane contains more Omega-3 fatty acids than any other leafy vegetable plant. Simopoulos states that Purslane has .01 mg/g of EPA. This is an extraordinary amount of EPA for land based vegetable sources. EPA is an Omega-3 fatty acid normally found mostly in fish and some algae. [3] It also contains vitamins (mainly vitamin C, and some vitamin B and carotenoids), as well as dietary minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, potassium and iron. Also present are two types of betalain alkaloid pigments, the reddish betacyanins (visible in the coloration of the stems) and the yellow betaxanthins (noticeable in the flowers and in the slight yellowish cast of the leaves). Both of these pigment types are potent antioxidants and have been found to have antimutagenic properties in laboratory studies.
SUPERFOOD!
(plus, it's free and extra tasty)
ADDED BENEFIT:
In antiquity its healing properties were thought so reliable that Pliny advised wearing the plant as an amulet to expel all evil.

Posted by Benchrest at 05/28/2008
If you do eat poke salad, please call poison control.
Clinical signs
In humans: The eating of nonfatal quantities of poke, perhaps of the shoots, may cause retching or vomiting after two hours or more. These signs may be followed by dyspnea, perspiration, spasms, severe purging, prostration, tremors, watery diarrhea (often bloody) and, sometimes, convulsions. If a fatal quantity is eaten, perhaps including roots, the above signs are followed by paralysis of the respiratory organs and other narcotic effects, culminating in the death of the poisoned person.
In horses: Colic, diarrhea, respiratory failure.
In swine: Unsteadiness, inability to rise, wretching. Jerking movements of the legs. Subnormal temperature.
In cattle: Same general signs plus a decrease in milk production.

Too couscous, then too collards, then not potato enough, then too truffles...
But the overriding gastronomical shortcoming is not redneck Budweiser enough! Hence Princess Cindy to the rescue?

The cardinal rule is to avoid television altogether. Who can tolerate someone like Matthews constantly praying like an ass? Or the commercials. Or the near total absence of quality content? Why not just sit on the couch and punch yourself in the balls?

Katrina, I don't know where have you been living but MSNBC is virtually an Obama's campaign headquarter. Couple of months, when Obama release his letter, it was only MSNBC and Huffingtonpost.com. While we can talk about bias and journalistic standards of corporate media, the fact is that liberal blogs coverage of issues has been even worse.

The increasing commercialization of the Internet is dramatically affecting access as well. I am not a computer expert, and it may be possible to filter alot this crap, but many websites won't work unless you allow popups and downloads of all their advertising. Computers which do not have huge RAM (and cost) are at a distinct disadvantage it would seem.
Our ability to communicate with each other and exchange ideas is a threat to our entrenched powers, and the FCC is a lapdog of media and government interest rather than the people's interest.
Enjoy while you can. Soon, I am afraid it will be just another boob tube. The fact that our government reads all email communications with the help of our service providers is very very creepy. Its like they have the authority to wire tap all of us. All in the name of national security. What a joke. Whose security?
