A Spicier VP Debate Hits YouTube (VIDEO)

posted by Ari Melber on 10/02/2008 @ 10:31pm

Thursday's vice presidential debate was a serious and substantive affair. With superb moderating by Gwen Ifill, the conversation stuck to policy-driven sparring, but the footage is already taking a different shape on YouTube.

Before the debate clock had run out, spicier clips from the debate were piling up on YouTube. Two of the most passionate featured Biden, speaking about personal adversity and why the "past is prologue" when it comes to John McCain's record:

Palin's pluckier side -- love it or hate it -- is on display in a short clip quoting her own assessment of her experience as a running mate. "How long have I been at this - like, five weeks?" she asked.

The policy debates over Iraq seemed more ferocious and slightly less scripted than the nominees' debate last week. Palin went after Biden for changing his position on the war -- and she misrepresented Obama's record on troop funding, as FactCheck.org reported -- but both candidates spoke passionately about the service of their own children. (Biden also went out of his way to note the service of McCain's son, something the Republican nominee almost never mentions on the trail.) While most voters oppose the Republican ticket's Iraq policy, Palin went on offense anyway, accusing her rivals of waving the white flag of surrender, although she had previously called for an "exit strategy" before she joined McCain's ticket:

Yet watch that same exchange with CNN's distracting dial charts, which crawl across the screen with live reactions from swing voters in Ohio, and you'll see it didn't play well with the focus group. One YouTuber is already pushing that failure, under the banner "Sarah Palin sees support dive when attacking Joe Biden." Of course, watching for Palin to fail makes viewers more likely to think she failed, so some reactions to the debate will depend on whether voters watched the raw footage, or CNN's real-time strategic clutter, or handpicked clips on YouTube.

  6. Can't see how it will change the outcome that polls currently predict: Obama 330 or better EC.

As for the debaters, he came across as rather solidly presidential, she came across as a bit of a bullshitter.

He got the best moment, his Jesse jackson ('88) "I understand ..." sequence.

And now to sleep, perchance to dream ...

Your match before the TV throng tonight, Was to show if I was wrong or right In my selecting you to ride along, In hopes that you'd turn out more right than wrong.

You showed us all that you are strong with fight And that you try to be less wrong than right. But I am still prepared to smite the gong If you ever get the Bill of Rights all wrong.

  20. In any other critical environment, it would not be acceptable for a leader to just get by, by not messing up. True, Palin did not mess up and self destruct, but she did not meet the test of having the depth of knowledge and/or experience.

Not good, not what we want or need...Governor Palin did not pass the test.

    Posted by rcrask at 10/02/2008 @ 11:35pm

  21. She said nothing, just regurgitated talking points, but that will be enough. After all the bar was set low enough for an earthworm to vault over.

No offense to Gwen, but once again the moderators asked questions most of us here could have answered. Big whoop. And then she didn't answer them.

  22. I just love it. The bloggers here echo the obnoxious and snobbish Rachel Maddow.

Palin was superb. She demonstrated with great vigor and clarity the difference between the liberal arrogance and elitism that looks down on everyone who doesn't look and sound like them.

Meanwhile, average Americans were seeing someone they can relate to who also voiced their dissatisfaction with the entrenched interests in Washington.

Palin is a breath of fresh air compared with the career politicos of both parties.

this was a grand slam as she also made Biden look like the arrogant buffoon he has been throughout his Washington career.

the fact that liberals are trying now to cheer a candidate who a few years ago was one of the biggest supporters of war with Iraq since the 1990's shows how desperate the left is to win.

    Posted by lvliberty1 at 10/02/2008 @ 11:41pm

  23. I was actually somewhat impressed with Palin's performance tonight. I'm sure some of that was due to the low bar already set, but I thought that in terms of speaking clearly and actually saying something, she did pretty well, and at times had some solid responses to Biden's arguments.

That said, though, I definitely think Biden won. His efforts to tag McCain/Palin to Bush seemed pretty effective, though he was somewhat weaker when it came to the energy debate. He did, though, decisively win the foreign policy side; even though he never dealt with Palin's point about how Presidential meetings with enemy nations without precondition are bad, he was extremely effective in beating back her claims about Iraq and Afghanistan.

  24. You're kidding, right? "Superb moderating"? That was the worst moderating I've ever seen in a debate. She let Paling change the subject, never held her to answering the questions asked, and never asked a follow up question. Clearly the McCain camps whining about her book cowed her. Pathetic.

Let's see how Brokaw treats his buddy McCain in the next one.

  25. lvliberty-You aren't a liberal, but you look down on everyone who has different views from yours and won't even associate with people who have different views. You are the elitist. It wasn't a grand slam for either, but we can expect the usual partisan BS claiming victory..

  26. I am SO thankful that that debate is over!

Biden is well informed, thoughtful, considerate, worldly, knows and likes McCain, is a bridge to Clinton's wealth of knowledge, prone to diplomacy, a fighter, humble, and a powerful advocate for the American middle class. 'Across the isles' is something he has done for three decades.

Face it... McCain would have been proud to have him as VP.

Palin's moxy and common sense are wonderful attributes... but she is not yet a statesman. Though her floundering was well hidden by her spunky composure, She is truly an empty suit when it comes to in depth analysis of the national issues of the day.

Though nothing was settled... this was no contest.

  32. While their two "principals" were helping to steal the American people blind by supporting this obscene bailout legislation, Biden and Palin proved to be every bit a vacuous as any reasonably intelligent prognosticator might have guessed. And its the measure of the Obama, system supporting filth here that the whole travesty is evaluated in terms of narrow political advantage. Small, vacuous folks typically support small vacuous candidates, that's plain enough.

In four years - if the horror that the American political reality has become is endurable that long - what with war with Iran, Russia, and Pakistan realized and a clueless and unprincipled tool ah-ing and um-ing his way through a presidency outfitted with most of the same Clinton oafal that so materially contributed to the genesis of the economic chaos we're currently experiencing, perhaps we'll be able to say - as unimaginable as it might seem - that George Bush was the second worst president of the 21st century.

She believes in witches and demons, doesn't believe in evolution and thinks being a "Joe Six-Pack" is something most middle class people aspire to.

Well, people like myself and most of my friends.

I not only believe in witchcraft and demons, I have had numerous battles with both here and overseas. It's not a Harry Potter moment nor much like the exorcist. Only the ignorant dismiss out of hand that which they know nothing about.

I also do not believe in evolution and am a college grad who did pass college biology with an A. So what? It has nothing to do with making sound decisions on economic and foreign policy issues.

And while I don't consider myself a "Joe Sixpack" person ( I don't watch football, basketball, or Nascar racing, drink mostly foreign brewed beer-but only occasionally), I understand and appreciate the sentiment she is expressing. She is referring to the Average American family. And most Americans understand that when she makes that comment. It is the left that seems to be oblivious to the reality of most Americans.

Finally, I can't comment on your neck of the woods. I live in Southern California. But I do stay away from the Republiks of LA and San Francisco. They are so far to the left, they seem like a foreign nation to me.

Your ignorance of both demons and witchcraft are showing. There are powers you obviously know nothing about in this world and not of this world.

Many people come here from 3rd world countries and bring generations of training in witchcraft with them. You surely have seen stores in Mexico as there are here in LA, NY and virtually ever major city in the US for supplies.

In one case that is interesting (at least to me) I went to a friends to pick up my wife. They were counseling a young woman whose boyfriend was trying to kill her. I asked if I could pray for her and she said yes. The moment I touched her forehead with my annointing oil she began screaming "fuego, fuego". I asked if she practiced witchcraft to gain advantage over others and she said yes. During nearly two hours of spirital battle, the demons inside of her at various times cut off her hearing, made her tongue and mouth go numb and other visible effects. All of that they tried to keep her from renouncing her witchcraft and confessing Jesus as Lord and Savior. In the end, G-d was victorious and she was delivered. I have seen many things that defy logic and science in these battles over the years. Never once have I sought them and I tell anyone who does that they don't know what they are saying.

the witchcraft that we battled in South Africa seemed to be everywhere. You can see male and female witches parading around with things like snakes in jars and sitting on hills smoking weed from pipes to keep in another state of mind.

I have seen a number of disbelievers change their view

  39. Sorry Liver, but if you are a multi- degreed, creationist/exorcist I'm not sure I would take political advice from you or your few friends. I may be Liberal, but that is way beyond wierd in my world.

BTW I am a passionate football fan, gun owner, mom, grandma, wife and member of a mainstream church. I also have a nine to five job, a dog and a mortgage. If Palin and McCain were actual Conservatives I would think it more likely I would be their natural constituency than you.

Seriously, I'm so average I'm just a flat line on the graph.

    HOWEVER

From the number of people that I have contact with on a regular basis they think Palin is HIGHLY ill-qualified for this position. She seems out of touch when it comes to even know whats going on in this country, much less the rest of the world. She was unable to name a single newspaper she reads, her knowledge of Russia is that you can basically see it from Alaska...a feat not as easily done when trying to look from Alaska to the continental US...She knew nothing of things McCain supported, or opposed for sure, did not know of any Supreme Court rulings outside of Roe vs Wade, claims in one sentence that being gay can be cured by prayer, yet supports her best friend's right to be gay, when asked about birth control she did not say that she was against such things as the day after pill, just that it was something she would not endorse herself.

During the debate she flat out said she wasn't going to necessarily answer the questions, but was going to address her own ideals and what she's done in the past...which is what I thought was supposed to be done during your campaign and interviews...a debate is there TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS so that we, the common American public can know exactly where you stand on these matters! Anyone who watches the news on even a semi-regular basis knows whats going on and has at least an opinion of it.

Thanks for the link FZ. That is not atypical of Central American Witchcraft. My wife's father stole some of her panties when she was a little girl and gave them to a witch who promised a spell that would give him major political and corporate power in El Salvador. He got it, but never acknowledged my wife as his daughter again. He basically promised to sell her young soul to demons for the power. She spent decades suffering from the results of that witchcraft.

Some very bizarre things go on down there.

It might be the language she uses in everyday life, but when you go to a job interview...which is basically what this debate was...you don't dumb yourself, if you are educated, to appeal to the committee that is considering you for a high ranked position. The committee wants you to sound intelligent, by using proper grammar, and then to know what it is you're talking about. For the record...I am a 26 year old, divorced & remarried mother of two, with a high school education who has worked to help her parents support her siblings since age 14, took care of my grandparents after I turned 18 until their deaths two years later, was a single mom to one child for three years after fighting for almost two years to get away from an abusive husband, who was only sentenced to 4 months in jail for attempting to rape a 5 year old child he saw in a complex, remarried last year to a wonderful man who was severely injured at work not too long afterward and unable to work for a while, I was pregnant with our daughter. I think I know one or two things about the hardships normal Americans face on a day to day basis.

I like what I know of Biden and Obama. I've never really been all that keen on the Democratic party as a whole since it was/is not popular in my community that I was raised in I also didn't know a lot of positive about it. I think the ideas that they've been consistent in laying out in front of us are really good ones and they seem to be made with very sound judgment. I'm looking forward to our leadership changing in that direction, popular or not.

  58. My mom, a lifelong center-right i would say conservative repub ("One day you'll vote your pocketbook, young man!") became aghast when Chimpie instituted shenanigans in ernest. Something just clicked and she saw the increasing dysfunction of modern society and thought of how the "leaders" of the last 66 years have stacked up and boy is she pissed!

  59. Is there really someone on here going on a rant about witchcraft? Wow.

  60. Spoiler alert!

"In one case that is interesting (at least to me) I went to a friends to pick up my wife.

You can see male and female witches parading around with things like snakes in jars and sitting on hills smoking weed from pipes to keep in another state of mind."

I guess I agree. I mean, denial of man's role in global warming defies logic and science. Denial of evolution also defies logic and science.

BTW, statements like these do not prove the existence of your god or witchcraft any more than they prove the existence of Thor, Zeus, Loki, Ra, etc. They also do nothing to disprove the ability of science to gather evidence as to their explanation.

Anyway, on topic, I can't believe anyone is still defending Palin. She's out of her league. We're talking about governing a nation. I'd like an explanation of anything constitutional coming from Palin's mouth with the elloquence of Biden's explanation of Article I.

  63. Great. In addition to serious political discourse, we're debating the existence or non-existence of witches and demons. Just in time for Halloween, which I thought we all agreed was a holiday about eating candy and spooky things that, in the 21st Century, we know aren't real!
