Senator Joseph Lieberman is scheduled to headline Pastor John Hagee's 2008 Christians United For Israel Washington-Israel Summit this July 22. In accepting Hagee's invitation, Lieberman became the most senior elected representative confirmed to appear at the annual gala. Last year, when Lieberman spoke at Hagee's summit, he compared the Texas televangelist to the biblical prophet Moses, dubbing him "an Ish Elochim," or "a man of God." Unless he rescinds his pledge to appear at this year's summit, Lieberman can be expected to deliver another soul-stirring tribute.
Hagee's vitriolic condemnation of Catholicism, his jeremiad declaring Hurricane Katrina divine punishment for New Orleans' hosting of a "homosexual rally," and his generally disturbing apocalyptic theology became national news last February when John McCain accepted his endorsement in a widely publicized ceremony.
While initially resisting pressure to reject Hagee's endorsement, McCain finally ended his relationship with Hagee when a sermon by the preacher describing the Holocaust as the will of God registered on the mainstream media's radar (Hear the now-infamous sermon here).
"Obviously, I find these remarks and others deeply offensive and indefensible, and I repudiate them. I did not know of them before Rev. Hagee's endorsement, and I feel I must reject his endorsement as well," McCain said on May 22.
How extreme is Hagee? And how cozy are he and Lieberman? Watch this video by Bruce Wilson of Talk2Action.org to find out.
Lieberman was aware of many of Hagee's vile statements well before McCain renounced him. On May 13, Fox News' Megyn Kelly asked Lieberman to respond the gathering criticism of Hagee's remarks. But instead of distancing himself from Hagee's views as McCain had, Lieberman launched into a spirited defense of the televangelist, describing him as someone who "represents a lot of people in this country, particularly Christians who care about the state of Israel."
At the time, prior to McCain's sweeping renunciation, Lieberman could have reasonably claimed to be unaware of the preacher's repugnant views on the Holocaust. Now, he has no excuse for ignorance. As a key McCain surrogate who McCain may select as his running mate, Lieberman must know why Hagee is no longer welcome on the so-called Straight Talk Express.
So why the silence? Why won't Lieberman, who is married to the daughter of Holocaust survivors, end his relationship with Hagee as well? Why, in apparent defiance of the McCain campaign, does he remain scheduled to headline Hagee's upcoming summit? If Lieberman plans to continue touting his moral fiber and independence as his greatest assets, he must renounce the hate-mongering Hagee.
The new progressive pro-Israel lobbying organization J Street released a petition today calling for Lieberman to terminate his relationship with Hagee. You can add your name by clicking here. With your help, Lieberman may finally conclude that Hagee is really a mamzer, not a man of God.

Hagee's endorsement of McCain shows what raging hypocrites most evangelicals are and how they point out Bible verses that support their views and ignore those that don't.No one knows how Jesus felt about the subject of gays, but we sure know what His views of divorce/ adultery are and, according to Jesus,McCain is not married to the woman he lives with, but is an unrepentant adulterer who is just living in a sinful relationship.Evangelicals, like LvLiberty,Hagee, etc, are quick to point out Bible verses that pertain to gays and were quick to point out verses about adultery when it came to Clinton, but are quite quiet about McCain and many are endorsing this unrepentant adulterer and will vote to put this "sinful" couple in office and then will blame the next natural disaster on gay people rather than on themselves for supporting such an unrepentant and "sinful" couple..

I'm not surprised at your attack on my person and not my point. I understand to deny the Master Race/Chosen People position of the Jews is regarded as anti-Semitic. But, what I am is anti-religion/magic/supernatural.
So the whole idea of 'Biblical Israel' is absurd to me. Like I posted earlier, we might as well try to establish "Tolkien Middle Earth." It's stupid and dangerous to try to graft mythical tales of magic onto reality.
As for my point:the reality of Zionist collaboration with Nazis (this, after all, is the point of departure for all of these comments: Hagee's assertion of Hitler doing God's and Zionism's work of colonizing Palestine.) Shall we deny some African's collaboration with European and Arab and(yes, it's true!) Jewish slavers in the African slave trade?
There is a plethora of documentation of collaboration between European Zionists and Nazis. Here's a couple links: www.counterpunch.org/brenner1223.html - 23k http://www.thetruthseeker.co.uk/article.asp?ID=1982
Do you actually deny the historical record of Zionist terror in Palestine? Or are you one of the truly racist Zionists that try to deny the existence of Palestinians altogether? I deny special divine dispensation for any person or people: Jews, Muslims, Brahmins, Christians, Anglos, Arabs, etc., etc. How about you? Are the "Jews" 'God's Chosen People"? Should the rest of us recognize our inferiority to God's Chosen? Sorry, not me.

This is going to be fun.
Lieberman:
For the war in Iraq
For Bush "energy bill"
Lieberman against Kerry in 2004
Lieberman kisses Bush
Obamas mentors: Clinton/Lieberman
2005- [Lieberman, D-Conn., who spent Wednesday and Thursday in Iraq, saw strong evidence that a workable American plan is in place.
"We do have a strategy," he said. "We do have a plan. I saw a strategy that's being implemented."]
Yep, that could have been our VP. Wait! It basically is!
Posted by crabwalk at 05/27/2008 @ 08:01am
It's a shanda I tell you! Looking at most of the Jewish representatives in Congress I get an ill feeling in my stomach as a fellow Yid. But Lieberman has been the worst, showing loyalty only to himself and Likud.
I find it a shame also that the right policies of Likud in Israel are therefore used to indicate their national attitude. There are many many Israelis who do want both an equitable two state solution and peace with their Arab cousins. The problem is the opposition in Israel isn't well organized and they depend upon the leadership of ancient generals who fall slave to the very vocal demands of those who insist upon the singularity of Eretz Yisrael. They have the most vibrant democracy in the Middle East (though I could make an argument for Turkey) yet the military and the extreme right still manage to rule the day. Change to Israeli policy will have to come with a new generation stepping up and making the changes from the inside. Of course with Uncle Joe and Aunt Dianne sending basically blank checks to buy extremely scary weapons little incentive to change is coming I fear.

Good morning, Max.
Excellent post.
This is one of the great multi-layered and disturbing ironies of our time --the American "Christian" religious right wing nut-jobs in a death kiss embrace with the (rather blindly fundamentalist in its own right, but for more obviously understandable reasons i.e. the Holocaust) American Zionist/Israel lobby. The lobby exhibits no outward appearance of discomfort at the acceptance of money from frothing at the mouth end of timers who disturbingly patronize the Jewish people by openly stating that they will eventually convert to Christianity or be condemned --condemned, no less, than during a world-wide end of times conflagration that is wished for to the point of being actively encouraged at every turn with gleeful enthusiasm.
This is an unholy alliance from Hell.
And yet it forms one of the more prominent threads of the narrative of our geopolitical reality. It is truly one of the more painful facts of American political life that this issue is one that is virtually universally forbidden to be discussed. How does one begin to address the problem if the first words out of one's mouth result in a crescendo of condemnation?
None of us can predict the future, but I find myself occasionally wishing for some kind of silver bullet to either provide a miraculous cure for the human disease of irrationality, or perhaps to simply put this broken horse out of its misery.
As one of my favorite figures of our era had indicated before he died an untimely death in late '96, the discovery of intelligent extraterrestrial life would be one possible event that might snap us out of our self-obsessed stupor.
Another cause for a glimmer of optimism is this fascinating story:
"A Superhighway to Bliss" --tinyurl.com/4cldsa
excerpt:
JILL BOLTE TAYLOR was a neuroscientist working at Harvard's brain research center when she experienced nirvana.
But she did it by having a stroke.
On Dec. 10, 1996, Dr. Taylor, then 37, woke up in her apartment near Boston with a piercing pain behind her eye. A blood vessel in her brain had popped. Within minutes, her left lobe -- the source of ego, analysis, judgment and context -- began to fail her. Oddly, it felt great.
The incessant chatter that normally filled her mind disappeared. Her everyday worries -- about a brother with schizophrenia and her high-powered job -- untethered themselves from her and slid away......
~So it's just possible that as we downward spiral toward global suicide, perhaps the bullet will bring the cure.
It would be a great relief to not have to go that far to find out.

But Arabs are no longer allowed to claim their Semitic past. boo-hoo,) - to post my whole hearted agreement with the above statement. Indeed, this planet would be far poorer if not for the contributions of many of our brothers and sisters who identify themselves as Jewish. However, this does not make the Jewish people or Israel infallible or immune to criticism. and to criticize is not anti-Semitic.
They have the most vibrant democracy in the Middle East Posted by yutsano at 05/27/2008 I wonder if Arab/Palestinian Israelis agree?
Posted by blueCedars at 05/27/2008 @ 08:34am
As they can vote in Israeli elections and there are Arabs in the Knesset, I think they would. In fact Arabs serve in the IDF. They are personally conflicted, but Arab blood does not keep Arabs who live in the territory of Israel from participating in everyday Israeli life.

Unfortunately, any people who gets their own 'state' can turn into opperssors. And the Likudnik folks have done just that. Trotsky called Israel a death trap for Jews. "Negotiators" with the Nazis in Hungary allowed a few Jews to get away, sending the rest to the chambers. Those few Jews got to go ... to Palestine.
The nationalism of the oppressor is a death trap for any ethnicity. And that is what much Zionism has evolved into.

I sense anger, and I certainly did not intend to get into an angry tete a tete with you. I do tend toward bombast at times; forgive me my verbosity. I just get frustrated when I feel that, especially when talking about the Mid-East, we must start our discussions from the consensus that there's a Master of the Universe old man with a beard "God" that writes books and chooses favorites and grants land deeds. (This is the basis for the philosophy of John Hagee and Lieberman, and, I might add, a majority of Israelis that I have spoken with. Including some dear friends.) I am not part of that consensus.
If we eliminated this mystical/magical thinking from our dealings with each other and instead act according to KNOWN REALITIES about PEOPLE , we'd get a lot farther towards cooperation and peace. again, forgive me my rants.

you get pissy and start in with "Why does he get to post here so much?!?!!?"

That Lieberman's first allegiance is to Israel and the eradication of Arabs and Islam, should be n0 surprise. The Israeli Zionists (of which Lieberman is one) have shown over the years that their ends of a 'Biblical' Israel (a bizarre vision akin to a 'Tolkien Middle-Earth") is worth any means: making secret deals with Nazis to terrorize colonize Palestine; amassing a homicidal/suicidal nuclear arsenal ("we get what we want or we take everybody with us!"); making deals with despots and racist regimes - Apartheid South Africa; Saudi Arabia; the Shah's Iran; etc.; or sidling up to pro-Israeli/anti-Jew fanatical bigots like Hagee.

I think what surprises me about the whole Isreal thing should not really surprise anyone. It's that I had this image of Jews as peace loving pacifists. But why? Just because they were persecuted. As a Regular Church-going and Bible-reading Christian I have heard and read countless times of the Jews suffering, and in fact, take the pre-Christ trials they went through as part of my own religious heritage. So you get this feeling that Jews are just constantly being beaten down, always the righteous underdog. But they are, apparently, just as capable of violence and hate as any of their persecuters ever was. And now, against the Palestians and others, they are taking their chance to show it.

"I ran outta gas! I had a flat tire! I didn't have enough money for cab fare! My tux didn't come back from the cleaners! An old friend came in from outta town! Someone stole my car! There was an earthquake! A terrible flood! Locusts!! It wasn't my fault I swear to God!!!"

I assume this is Gore talking about his trip to The Supremes?

at least turkey has rejected theocracy!
so have most other mid east nations. in fact the only theocracy in the region is Iran.
Turkey was never a theocracy.
the Ottoman empire was multi racial, multi religious, multi ethnic etc. that is the reason it outlasted most other empires.

I hate empires. Can they offer refuge & security to some "sitting duck" populations? I suppose so. Maybe they were absorbed or assimilated for that very reason. But why do we always seem to come back to Finland?

the life span of empires has gotten shorter and shorter.

I didn't say that no one else is concerned about innocent loss of life. I said THAT is what concerns ME. Is there a need to get defensive?
Posted by nova08 at 05/28/2008 @ 2:21pm
What concerns me is the needless killing of Palestinians. Or the killing of innocent women and children on both sides.
there is something strange here. on one hand you deplore the killing of Palestinians. then it's women and children that get your concern. what about Israeli men? they seem to have been left out of your equation.

Joe Lieberman is the capo in the Hagee plan for Israel and the Jews. He is the Jew that fools the other Jews into the delousing showers where they will get their snootful of ZyklonB and then be tossed into the crematoria by Jesus at the end of time. He is a collaborator in the plan and thus he must be declared a leper by the rest of us.
Hagee and his friends have energized the most backward, radical and nasty elements of the Israeli electorate, saying that he favors Israel. He favors an Israel that is "judenfrei," without Jews. He favors a plan that calls all Jews to Israel so that Jesus can slaughter them when they don't convert, all to Hagee's triumphant and final erection.

Did anyone else see the guest on the Daily Show talk about Hagee's church in Texas where new members go to a back-woods retreat and part of the process is to "vomit out your demons" together into paper bags? Remember when Coulter called Christians "perfected Jews"? There are many ways and reasons to come to Christ, and I see a lot of these right-wing fundy's coming to the religion that I love only to use it as a tool to hate others and gain power for themselves. It's as if they can't even hear what they themselves are saying. If you go to the Bible only looking for words to justify your already existing opinions you hurt yourself just as you are hurting others. I mentioned the Palestinians first because I see Isreal as the aggressor in this conflict. And, yes, I do worry more about women and children then grown men in any war. I freely admit my sexist bias. I don't like the idea of anyone dying needlessly, so that would include Isreali men. I would like it if all the killing stopped, especially killing wrapped up in so many lies and delusions.

yeah right.
end of discussion.

More about John Hagee and Joe Lieberman's shared views about the need to bomb Iran very, very soon:

Gee, I don't know what's worse...the delusions of Hagee's Israel supporters (my country: right or wrong), or the completely shameless opportunism of Jews like Lieberman who are willing to take money from these poor ignorant people (who believe that Jews will be converted or killed on Judgment Day).
