  • Any candidate that runs against "free trade" and outsourcing will win. Obama could have had a landslide victory in every state on those issues. He is very lucky in having McCain as an opponent, because he has nothing to offer Main Street. If Obama does not seriously address the jobs issue in the next four years, he won't get another four years, and the Democratic Party will not hold on to Congress. Well-paying jobs, and the disposable income they produce, are the engine of the American market. No jobs, no market!

  • I do not dislike Gordon Smith and know very little about Oregon politics, but if this will help in throwing Lieberman overboard, I'm all for his defeat. I think an over-sized Congress and Senate are the only cogent argument. If the new majority is just as corrupt as this crowd, we will know immediately that their souls have been purchased.

  • I'm as appalled as anyone by McCain's selection of a wilfully ignorant proto-fascist as running mate, and at Republicans' subsequent attempts to deflect criticism by suddenly finding an interest in fighting sexism. But what on earth is Nichols's snide remark about Stevens's riding Palin's "apron strings" (used to mean nothing other than political "coat tails"), other than crude sexism? Come on, not in The Nation!
