  • My favorite David Levine cartoon, in The Nation circa 1991 explains the rule of succession for Soviet leadership: Lenin was bald, Stalin hairy, Khruschev bald, Brezhnev hairy, and so on. Levine speculated that Yeltsin (hairy) would succeed Gorbachev.

Note that the rule has transcended the Soviet era with Putin (bald) succeeded by Medvedev (hairy). Only a cartoonist of Levine's caliber, with an exquisite eye for visual detail, would have divined this simple truth.
