Democrats and Republicans alike are calling for some of the $400 billion in Social Security taxes collected each year to be invested in the stock market. A question is raised as whether the change would be risky; and whether individual investors, most of whom know little about stocks and bonds, be placing their retirement future in the hands of responsible brokers. On November 25, 1996, The Wall Street Journal listed disciplinary actions taken by the National Association of Securities Dealers against fifteen firms and dozens of individual managers and brokers.
