One name that central Montana used to go by was Buffalo Land. It is an actual, serious proposal by a Montanan, but a western Montanan to turn a large area of eastern Montana into a North American Serengeti. Meanwhile, back in the twentieth century, this past March the fee for grazing cattle or sheep on Federal lands went up by 14 percent and environmental activists from the Sierra Club, Earth First and the Natural Resources Defense Council sent up a small cheer. Federal grazing leases on some 300 million acres in the West.
