This article focuses on social security in the United States, with specific reference to the cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA), and politics revolving around COLA, along with the role of media. On December 31, Americans on Social Security received a COLA of 4.2 percent. It represented a triumph of truth and fair play over a campaign of disinformation and bias involving virtually all the media. There was a serious push in the media for a freeze or a lid on the COLA, but no public debate. News reports, editorials and commentaries concluded unanimously that cowardly politicians had finally bowed to an affluent "special interest," the elderly, in a greedy grab that would worsen the budget deficit.
