This article discusses Democratic officials' responses to the Iraq War. Prominent Democrats, such as Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi, have advocated an end to the war, but have made little headway convincing their colleagues to push for withdrawal. It suggests that many leaders in the Democratic Party have refused to take a position on the Iraq War for fear of alienating themselves from public opinion. However, a majority of Americans polled believe that American troops should exit Iraq within a year.
