The article presents information about the book "William Dean Howells," by Oscar W. Firkins. William Dean Howells owed his reputation to the fact that he expressed for the space of half a century in a pseudo-literary manner the thoughts and feelings of the great mass of his countrymen. His emotions were their emotions, his ideas were their ideas, his sense of humor was their sense of humor. Firkins notes how the novelist carefully avoids the more tragic situations that rise out of relationships between the sexes, situations which after all make up so important a part of the drama of life.
