The Way of Philosophy

The article discusses books and authors. Philosophy is a discipline in which only the naive expect to find agreement, progress, or demonstrably true conclusions. In this, it is more like poetry than science. Every generation is sure to discover some philosophers who protest that the situation is scandalous and attempt to re-form the ways of philosophy. Writer Irvin Edman's discussion of four perennial ways of philosophic thought in "Four Ways of Philosophy" is a brilliant interpretative study. Its great merit is the imaginative skill with which it recreates the moods and attitudes whose compulsions make formally invalid arguments and conclusions appear plausible to those who hold them.
