Pierre Mendes-France's supporters were saddened by the fact that France as a whole, which six months before had been hailing the former premier as a hero, watched his departure with little emotion. The general apathy was deplored particularly by those who looked to Mendes-France as the natural leader of the New Left. The accession of Edgar Faure, who had been Mendes-France's First Minister, to the premiership, was marked by elements of drama. Mendes-France abstained in the vote which created the new premier. It is precisely to the Right that Faure has turned and the fact that France today is governed by a Cabinet without Socialists is of considerable significance.
