This article discusses the book "The United States and Argentina," by Arthur P. Whitaker and "Brown Gold. The Amazing Story of Coffee," by Andres Uribe. Whitaker's excellent book on Argentina avoids the Calvinistic ethotionalism and the chauvinism which taint contemporary United States reporting on foreign countries. He looks at Argentina from the viewpoint of Argentine traditions and social forces and pats it in proper focus with the American culture. Whatever shortcomings the small book may have are due not to lack of scholarship or any misrepresentation but to space limitations, which have required over-simplification and too limited treatment of a number of crucial matters.
