The irony of the U.S. 1970 elections is that, while they occasioned a general failure of conservative Republicanism at the polls, they may have produced the party take-over that Barry Goldwater urged. There are two ways to assess the impact of the elections on the situation within the Republican Party. The most important event of 1970, as far as the Republican Party was concerned, was the White House excommunication of Charles Goodell. How other Republicans responded to this unprecedented maneuver reveals a good deal about the future of the party.
